From choral music to full orchestra, the Renaissance to music of today, we've got a look back at the 'Sounds of Spoleto' on this final edition of Carolina Classics. There are works by Orlando Gibbons, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Johann Strauss Jr, Maurice Ravel, Edward Hart, of the College of Charleston music faculty, Gabriel Faure, Beethoven and others.
It’s the final concert of the 2010 Spoleto Chamber Music Series, and Geoff Nuttall has a surprise in store - instead of Schubert for five, he’s got Mendelssohn for Eight – the effervescent Octet for Strings. Before we get to eight, we’ve got a two-by-four: Bach’s Second Orchestral Suite, that is, as well as Four-handed Brahms Hungarian Dances.

Geoff Nuttall and his Spoleto Chamber Music mates go Baroque with a performance of one of the most unappreciated musical gifts in history, played by a group Nuttall calls the “Spoleto Festival USA Baroque All-Stars." Also on this edition of Carolina Classics comes Rossini's William Tell Overture, and Dvorak's Serenade in D minor for winds.
Spoleto Chamber Music Concert VII: This concert from the 2010 Chamber Music Series features a souvenir of the Secret Life of Franz Joseph Haydn. We’ll also hear Jonathan Berger introduce his re-created Brahms, from old Edison piano rolls, and the Spoleto debut of pianist Inon Barnatan.
Spoleto Chamber Music Concert V: This concert from the 2010 Chamber Music Series at the Dock Street Theatre features Director of Chamber music Geoff Nuttall in an all-star performance of Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Quartet. Also featured are new works by the ever-inventive Spoleto pianist Stephen Prutsman, and Spoleto Chamber Music’s Composer in Residence, Jonathan Berger.
Spoleto Chamber Music Concert IV: The fourth concert in the 2010 Chamber Music Series features Director of Chamber music Geoff Nuttall introducing a hard-to-grasp “modern” work", composed by Beethoven in 1825! Also some Strauss a la Schoenberg and an unusual quartet by Anton Arensky that swaps out the second violin for a second cello.
Spoleto Chamber Music Concert III: Clarinetist Todd Palmer introduces you - and the world - to "Gumboots" - a surprising new quintet for clarinet and strings. To go with it, a 17th century sonata and a dash of goulash from Hungarian composer Ernst von Dohnanyi. Plus Emmanuel Villaume's last performances as Spoleto Music Director for Opera and Orchestra.
Spoleto Chamber Music Concert II: In the second concert in the 2010 Chamber Music Series at the Dock Street Theatre, Director Geoff Nuttall and his band mates in the St. Lawrence String Quartet preach the gospel of Haydn, Also in this complete concert of Chamber Music from the Spoleto Festival USA, we’ll hear a landmark Bartok trio, and a beautiful Bach sonata played on the viola.
Spoleto Chamber Music Concert I: It’s a big day for Carolina Classics at the Dock Street Theatre under the leadership of new Artistic Director Geoff Nuttall. You’ll hear the new and improved acoustics for yourself as Nuttall adds charm, wit, and information to the proceedings – both firmly in the style – but notably different from – his predecessor Charles Wadsworth.

Brahms' Hungarian Dances; Cellist Alisa Weilerstein plays DeFalla with her mother pianist Vivian Hornik Weilerstein; pianist Inon Barnatan; Brevard Music Center Orchestra plays an Italian doubleheader; Paula Robison joins the Charleston Symphony for Mozart's Flute Concerto.
Selections by English composer Thomas Linley, Clarinettist Todd Palmer plays Barber's "Hermit Songs;" Enrique Graf plays Bach's French Suite No. 6; and Charlotte's Oratorio Singers perform Randall Thompson's Allelujah; Pedja Muzijevik and the Greenboro Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in Beethoven's Choral Fantasy.
